Indianapolis Latvian Community Center

Indianapoles Latviešu Sabiedriskais Centrs

Location:

The Latvian Community Center is located at 1008 West 64th St. Indianapolis, Indiana 46260. If you are interested in renting the Latvian Center, please contact Andris Berzins at (317) 255-0992.

History:

In 1962, a few Local Latvians started a fundraising campaign to build a new facility for the local Latvian Community that would bring together the various Latvian Organizations under one roof. After three years of vigorous fundraising, the Community Center purchased its property on 64th Street and began construction in 1965. The fundraising efforts had only raised enough funds for materials, so hundreds of volunteers donated their time every weekend, totaling approximately 17,000 hours of volunteer time to build the Community Center. Once the Community center opened its doors, it was quickly determined that the Center needed more space and quickly raised the funds to triple the square footage. Today the Latvian Community Center is home to many Latvian organizations including the Latvian School, Latvian Welfare Organization (DV), Choir & Folk Dance Groups and various other groups. Many programs and events that happen throughout the year would not be possible without the Community Center. Recently, other local nationality groups and nonprofit groups have begun to use the Latvian Center and calling it their home.

In the past few years, the Community Center has begun an aggressive campaign to remodel and update the entire facility, though there is much work to be done, the future looks bright for the Latvian Community Center.
